Independent Director- Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation Board

Darwin

As an Independent Director, you will play a crucial role in providing strategic professional guidance and oversight to BAC, ensuring its continued success and adherence to best governance practices.

INDEPENDENT DIRECTOR

Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation based in Maningrida NT, West Arnhem Land is seeking an experienced and dedicated Independent Director to join its Board of Directors. The BAC Board has, for many years, been strengthened by the addition of Independent Directors appointed for their corporate governance expertise. BAC is now recruiting new Independents to replace outgoing directors who have reached the end of their term.

This is a great opportunity for individuals who will not hesitate to rise to the challenges presented by the diversity of language and clan groups in the region and who are passionate about contributing to the development and prosperity of remote Aboriginal communities, to add value to a unique and dynamic organisation established in 1973 to provide services and advocate for residents of Maningrida Homelands.

As an Independent Director, you will play a crucial role in providing strategic professional guidance and oversight to BAC, ensuring its continued success and adherence to best governance practices. Key responsibilities include:

Participating actively in Board meetings (one meeting a month as a rule, but can vary), discussions, and decision-making processes.

Providing independent and objective judgment on matters relating to BAC operations, financial management, and strategic direction.

Collaborating with fellow Directors and executive leadership to develop and implement policies, initiatives, and long-term plans.

Monitoring financial performance, risk management strategies, and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Contributing expertise, insights, and guidance to uphold BAC mission and objectives.

Upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in all Board activities.

This is a remunerated position with sitting fees ($500/month) paid for each Board Meeting.

Preference will be given to Northern Territory residents and candidates identifying as Australian Aboriginal.

Ideally, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

An impressive track record of success in the either private or public or both sectors.

Proven experience serving on corporate boards.

Familiarity with governance frameworks, regulatory standards, and risk management practices.

Demonstrated understanding of financial analysis, budgeting, and reporting principles.

Sound level of cross-cultural competency.

A legal qualification would be beneficial but not essential.

A commitment to ethical leadership, diversity, and inclusion.

A good understanding of the role that governance plays in running Aboriginal organisations.

Application Process

Qualified candidates are invited to submit their Expressions of interest including a CV outlining their relevant experience, qualifications, and reasons for their interest in serving on the BAC Board of Directors in PDF format only by COB 31 May 2024 . Please address your application to email: [email protected]
