About the opportunity

The introduction of the new University of Sydney Enterprise Agreement 2023-26 brings an exciting opportunity to establish more than 150 new continuing, education-focused (EF) academic positions. We are seeking talented educators with a passion for teaching and demonstrated excellence in educational practice, education innovation, and education research. This new group of outstanding educators will enrich our delivery of world class teaching at the University of Sydney through their leadership and expertise in both pedagogy and enhancing the student experience.

As part of this key initiative, the University of Sydney welcomes applications for a Professor (Education Focused) in the School of Chemistry, Faculty of Science. The School of Chemistry has a strong reputation for teaching excellence, educational leadership and innovation, while also being one of the most research-intensive schools in the University. The School engages with industry, government and the community to educate aspiring chemists, train and support researchers as they work to address critical real-world challenges, and is recognised as one of the top Chemistry Schools in Australia. The School’s research themes include a dedicated Chemical Education and Communication Research (CECR) theme, a dynamic and productive grouping that brings together a number of education-focussed researchers.

The School of Chemistry offers high quality undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Chemistry. Undergraduate teaching is delivered to students completing Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry majors, and to a broad range of students from other Science majors and related STEMM programs. The School’s principle postgraduate offerings are research-based Masters and Doctoral degrees.

For our Professor of Chemistry (Education Focused), we seek a senior leader in education who will lead efforts to enhance student learning within the School and wider Faculty through innovative educational practices, evidence-based curriculum development and creative teaching design. This role will involve the design, implementation, and evaluation of educational initiatives, leading and coordinating high-quality teaching, and spearheading projects to explore pedagogical advancements, curriculum development and program design within the School and Faculty, to elevate our reputation as a leader in Chemistry Education.

The ideal candidate will have a proven record of leading innovative teaching and learning initiatives, developing and assessing program-level materials in alignment with best practice, and contributing to the advancement of teaching methodologies with international impact. The appointee is expected to conduct significant and impactful research in chemistry education, secure major project funding to support this research, and disseminate their findings at appropriate international meetings and conferences.

The successful candidate will be expected to dedicate most of their contribution to teaching, teaching-related activities (up to70%) and chemistry education research (20%), while also engaging in governance, leadership, and engagement activities (10%). Additionally, you will mentor junior academics, providing advice on teaching methodologies, education research approaches, publications, and career advancement.
